When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead is a very exceptional book and well written. Some parts were extremely interesting. This book reminds me a lot like "Lost". "Lost" the T.V. show is about people who crash on a mysterious island and travel through time just like in this book. Traveling through time is a very hard thing to write about and the author did a very good job of describing what time travel is about.
This book is very well written. An example of this is the author's decision to make one segment into sequential order. In one important scene, the author puts the main characters thoughts in order. Another reason the book is well written is how the author gives you a clear description of what the ghost looks like. I really liked how the author describes one character beating up another character. When the author writes in the book 'bent over and frozen' it gave me a clear picture of a kid that was bent over and blood coming down.
My advice to this author would be to not make one character's life so dark. Sal gets punched, nearly gets run over by a truck, and then breaks his arm. At least he is a happy character and still has Miranda as a friend, but I would like to see better things happen to him in his lifetime.
As you can see, from my examples When You Reach Me is an exceptional book and is very well written.
